How Much Water Does Your Body Actually Need?

Most people have heard the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day. It is a convenient shorthand, but current health research tells a more nuanced story — one where body size, age, activity level, and climate all shift what adequate daily intake actually means in practice.

Water and the Human Body

The proportion of water in the body varies considerably — from around 55 per cent in older adults to 75 per cent in younger individuals, depending on body composition. Some of the concentrations are striking: the brain and heart are approximately 73 per cent water, muscles and kidneys sit at around 79 per cent, and even bones contain roughly 31 per cent. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends around 2.7 litres of total fluid daily for women and 3.7 litres for men, with roughly 20 per cent of that expected to come from food sources rather than beverages alone. A long-term NIH study following more than 11,000 adults over three decades found that those with consistently good hydration tended to experience fewer chronic health conditions — suggesting that hydration habits compound over time in ways that are not always obvious day to day.

These figures are starting points, not universal prescriptions. Children have higher proportional water requirements and are more susceptible to dehydration. Older adults often experience reduced thirst sensitivity and benefit from drinking on a regular schedule rather than waiting for the cue. Pregnant and breastfeeding women carry elevated needs to support blood volume and milk production. Understanding your household's specific profile is more useful than applying a single blanket rule.

Physical activity is one of the biggest individual variables in daily fluid needs.
