The Stress Hormone Your Water Bottle Can Influence
A 2025 study from researchers at Liverpool John Moores University, published via The Conversation, split healthy adults into habitually low-fluid drinkers (under 1.5 litres a day) and higher-fluid drinkers, then put both groups through a standard public-speaking and mental-arithmetic stress test. Both groups reported feeling similarly nervous and had comparable heart-rate increases — but the low-fluid group showed "a much more pronounced cortisol surge," the study's authors wrote. Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone, and the researchers point to vasopressin — a hormone the body releases more of when fluid intake runs low — as a likely mechanism, since it also interacts with the brain's stress-response system.
Beyond a Single Study
This isn't an isolated finding. Writing for Psychology Today, mental health counsellor Anthony Smith rounds up a broader body of hydration research: reviews have linked exercise-induced dehydration to measurable drops in memory, attention, and spatial reasoning, and one 2018 analysis found lower daily water intake was associated with a higher risk of depression and anxiety symptoms — an association, not proof that dehydration alone causes either condition. A separate trial found that people who cut back on their usual water intake reported feeling "less calm, content and vigorous," while those who increased it reported the opposite shift.
More Water Isn't Automatically Better
None of this is a case for drinking as much as possible. Smith is careful to flag that overhydration carries its own risk — diluting sodium and potassium levels enough to trigger hyponatremia, which can bring on its own neuropsychiatric symptoms — and suggests checking with a healthcare provider before making a significant change to fluid intake. The Liverpool researchers add their own caveat too: a lab-based stress test with healthy young adults "cannot fully replicate the complex psychological and social stressors people face in everyday life," and it will take longer-term research to confirm whether staying well hydrated meaningfully reduces stress-related health problems over years, not just in a single afternoon.
